Our Story

Recognizing that the people of Union County had limited access to medical care and after hours services, it became clear to independent doctors Gary Bevill, Matthew Callaway, and James Sheppard that a “one-stop” healthcare facility would best serve their patients and the community. In late 1997 and early 1998, they formally joined efforts and put their vision on paper.

By the fall of 1999, the three separate solo practices moved to a new, single story, 20,000 sq. ft. facility. This made their vision a reality! Healthcare services in Southern Arkansas immediately changed as access to convenient care was increased and available seven days a week.

Local and regional growth of the clinic created further demand for services bringing Marcia Ford, APRN to come aboard in early 2000. By the middle of 2001, Dr. Eric Hatley joined SAMA and was followed by Harriette Allison, APRN who joined the practice in 2003.

In 2002, the physicians made an investment that would change the course of the clinic and thrust SAMA into the national spotlight years later. We were one of the first clinics in Arkansas to purchase an Electronic Medical Record system (EMR) and in the years since have worked to maximize the utilization of the EMR System to provide better care for our patients.

In January 2004, we officially became SAMA HealthCare Services PA and for the next four years continued improving upon our processes while staying with a provider base of six. In 2008, we had a change in Administrators as Pete Atkinson MHA joined our team after working for seven years at The Medical Center of South Arkansas.

The next four years were spent preparing for change. President Obama entered the White House in January of 2009. While we did not know how things would change it was apparent from the beginning of his administration that healthcare reform was a top priority. This coupled with President Bush’s pledge in 2004 that all Americans would have an Electronic Health Record by 2014 told us that change was not only coming but coming soon.

In 2012, SAMA was chosen to be a Comprehensive Primary Care clinic meaning that multiple payers were going to invest in our clinic over the next four years in order to transform SAMA into a patient centered medical home. We jumped on this opportunity creating four care teams, hiring additional staff, and changing our workflow. The results of this transformation and the model which we have created have been recognized nationally and spotlighted in articles written by MSNBC, The Journal of the Arkansas Medical Society, as well as many others.

Over the next two years, we brought in six additional nurse practitioners, one of which specializes in pediatrics and runs our “SAMA Kids Clinic," and Dr. Deanna Hopson who we built another care team around.

Today we are seeing more patients than ever and our quality is better than ever. Five fully staffed and well organized care teams, our new schedule, and additional providers allow us to see over 100 same day appointments on any given day. We are open 360+ days a year, have a provider on call 24/7/365, and have lab, pharmacy, and radiology services on site.

In the year ahead, we expect to finish a 10,000 square foot expansion and Dr. Lauren Monteith will be joining us in August. We are talking to a Social Worker and a specialist who could possibly be joining us in 2016 as well. We also hope to focus more on geriatrics and population health helping educate and provide preventative services.

“In this world you're either growing or you're dying” according to famous football coach Lou Holtz. We continue to grow each day. Our goal is simple; to provide the best healthcare services we possibly can for our friends and family here in in South Arkansas and to do it for a long time.

Arkansas has always been my home except for 2 years in Louisiana as a child. From Bearden High School, to Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, to UAMS in Little Rock, to my AHEC Residency in El Dorado and establishing a solo practice in 1985, I have enjoyed south Arkansas.

As a freshman medical student, the prevailing thought on family life from my peers was that medicine and family involvement don’t mix. Frankly, they were wrong! It does take a concerted effort, but my understanding wife, two grown children, and now grandkids are the most important things in the world to me and I’m still actively involved in their lives. They are key reasons I enjoy being a Family Physician and most of my outside activities and hobbies revolve around my family.

I also have always loved working with older adults and our “Senior Citizens.”  That is one reason I worked hard to get the additional certifications and specialties in Geriatrics.  Ruby, our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, who is a duly certified therapy dog by the Alliance of Therapy Dogs makes nursing home rounds with me as a therapy dog.  It is amazing watching the smiles of the nursing home residents as we visit them.

As a founding member of SAMA, I’m thankful daily for what has been accomplished through the clinic and look forward to the challenges and opportunities of each new day.

I grew up in Little Rock but did live in El Dorado as a toddler. I still remember driving up to Warner Brown Hospital to get my mom and new baby sister in 1964. I was active in marching band and choir at Cloverdale Jr High and McClellan High School and took as many science classes as I could cram in my schedule. I got my B.S. in Chemistry at UCA in 1984 and started at UAMS the next fall. I met my future husband, Rodney Hopson, my senior year of medical school while in Fayetteville for an Ophthalmology rotation. The month of May 1988 was very busy; we both got our degrees and then got married! We moved to Fort Smith, AR for my Residency in Family Medicine at the AHEC. Our first daughter was born while we were there. Next, our son was born while we lived in Hot Springs; I drove to Nashville, AR to work in the ER and did some fill-in at a Family Medicine clinic in Hot Springs from time to time. We moved to El Dorado in 1995 for my husband’s job. Patti Rivers, APN and I first worked together at the Stephens Community Clinic from 1996-1997. The last 2 additions to the Hopson clan, two more daughters, were born during those years. So Patti got to work with an exhausted, nauseated partner for nearly 2 years.

In October of 1997 I started working at the El Dorado AHEC as a faculty member until 2004 when I began working at Interfaith Clinic on a full time basis. Patti joined me there in 2006; we've worked together ever since. Rodney and I almost have an empty nest. We are active with our church family at Marrable Hill Chapel.

When Patti and I first approached Pete Atkinson about working at SAMA we got goose bumps as he began explaining the team concept they were in the process of implementing. We have been the Green Team now since May 2014 and couldn't feel more blessed to work with such a wonderful group of people.

I was bred, born, and raised in Arkansas. I am proud of my upbringing and I have continued the trend by raising my three children in Arkansas. I married a man from Florida 30 years ago and have converted him to Arkansas and he now has a southern drawl. My undergraduate studies was at Henderson State Univeristy and my graduate studies was at UAMS in Little Rock. I have been practicing as a primary care provider in the state of Arkansas for 20 years taking care of all walks of life from rural, non-insured, and now insured families. One of the most important things to me is helping patients to take care and be responsible for their healthcare. Giving them the tools to enable them to become more proactive in their health, diseases, and preventions are vital to change the health epidemic in Arkansas. A team approach will ensure better health outcomes.

I am excited to be apart of SAMA and what SAMA stands for in South Arkansas. I believe that we can make a difference in this community in a positive way and can set the standards of delivering holistic care in a timely manner and becoming aggressive in preventive care.

Early in life, even as a child growing up in Jonesboro, Arkansas, I knew being a Physician would be a lifelong ambition. I decided not to wait that long! My Zoology degree from ASU Jonesboro followed by Medical School in Little Rock sealed my drive to pursue a Family Physician career. During my Residency, I wanted to give back to my childhood community so when just that opportunity presented itself in Jonesboro, I knew it would provide a sound foundation of medical experience. For two years, I learned a tremendous amount about the realities of a medical practice and caring for my Jonesboro patients.

When I learned of the needs and opportunities in El Dorado, it was an easy decision when asked to join SAMA in July 2001. Everyone has welcomed me and my family and the staff has been great to work with.

When not in the office or hospital, there is a high probability I can be found enjoying time with my wife Sarah, son Thomas, and daughter Miriam.  If not at home, the chances of finding me may be slim because I’m probably in the Arkansas woods and streams either hunting, fishing, or both!

Oh! I don’t tell just everyone, but my wife says I’m an excellent cook. I do OK!
